“I haven’t lived in Key West for over a year, but this came up in discussion tonight and it reminded me of how much I hated the Florida Keys aerial mosquito control! These helicopters used to fly back and forth over my house for an hour and a half straight. They did a 180-degree turn directly over my house to go back and forth over the wetlands, and they would fly so low and recklessly that it looked like they were going to crash straight into my house. It sounded like I was living in a war zone. The choppers weren’t labeled either, so it took me a while to figure out who they were and what they were doing when we first moved to the Keys. They looked like military planes at first. My neighbors (also renters) acted alarmed about who they were and what they were doing too. I also loathed the fact that they were spraying carcinogenic insecticides directly over my neighborhood, poisoning the air that I breathed. The combination of UV rays + those insecticides is a dangerous combo. One time I went outside for a couple hours after an aerial spray and my lips got a chemical burn. They peeled off completely and stayed painfully raw for 6+ months. I couldn’t go in the sun at all after that for 2 years. If I ever get skin cancer on my lips (which seems likely due to the severity of the burn), I will know for sure that it was from this incident. Mosquito control might be a good thing in places like the Keys, but the amount of spraying they do here is excessive...with no warnings about the potential effects to public health. Just like Terminix, they continue to claim that the chemicals they spray are safe, when we all know that they’re not. If I had known that they would be flying/spraying over my house so often, I would have never moved into a house on Sugarloaf.”
