The arid climate of Utah and the high altitudes throughout the state create a unique set of pest problems for the state. While most Utah homeowners have encountered pests, they don't always know what insects they are facing and what kind of problems they can cause. In order to help prepare you for any pests that may end up in your home, we have provided detailed descriptions of some of the most common Utah pests.
Ants are one of the most common insects on the planet and there are many different species of ants in Utah, but there are a few that are very prevalent and frequently make their way into homes and buildings. Pavement ants are the most common ants found in Utah homes. These ants are blackish in color and prefer to nest in pavement and sidewalk cracks, but often enter the home through tiny openings. Once inside, you may find them near food sources such as on your pantry shelves or in cabinets. Carpenter ants are very prevalent in Utah as well, and they are not only a nuisance, but can also cause structural damage to your home. These ants are relatively large and black in color. These insects burrow into wood to make their nests, but the damage usually occurs on the inside of the wood and the only evidence of their existence is the piles of sawdust that they leave.
Ticks are another common concern in Utah, especially because so many residents and visitors of the state spend a significant amount of time outside enjoying Utah's natural beauty. There are two main species of ticks in Utah of which you should be aware. The Rocky Mountain wood tick is very common and can transmit a number of diseases. This species can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever, Colorado tick fever and Tularemia. These ticks have a similar appearance to the American dog tick, which is also frequently found in this state and can carry many of the same diseases as the Rocky Mountain wood tick. Fortunately for residents, Lyme disease is not thought to be carried by ticks in Utah. These pests are outdoor insects, but they can be brought indoors on humans or pests.
Unfortunately for Utah homeowners, termites are a major problem in the state. Utah has both subterranean termites and dry wood termites. Both the eastern and arid land subterranean termites are common in Utah. Subterranean termites feed on moist wood cellulose, which is in the interior part of a wooden structure, and then fill the holes with dirt. This is especially problematic because the damage is inside the wood and cannot be easily seen. Often, by the time termites are discovered, they have already done thousands of dollars in damage. Wooden foundation under your house, floorboards, and trim are all commonly attacked by these termites. Per their name, drywood termites prefer to feed on dry wood. Unlike subterranean termites, they don't fill in the holes they create with mud and they also leave behind feces.
These are just a few of the pests you may encounter in and around your Utah home. Other common pests include rodents, stinging insects and bed bugs, just to name a few. Regardless of what type of pest problems you are facing, pest control experts will work with you on an individual basis to provide safe, effective treatment plans to keep your home pest free.
